The third of the four coaching workshops that are being held for coaches and managers of domestic bicross clubs this winter took place yesterday at the headquarters of the Czech Cycling Association. Compared to the previous two, this one was somehow different. The guest of the morning part was mental coach and hockey coach Jakub Vopálka, MSc., who gave us more insight into the mental preparation of riders.

Perhaps all of us have encountered situations in sports or everyday life when we faced enormous stress, uncertainty and felt that our body and mind were not listening to us. Everyone copes with it in their own way, but it does not always bring the effect that we would like. Jakub's lecture was not only about this.

One of the topics was, for example, support. It consists of three components, namely trust, respect and communication. Above all, communication is sometimes a bit neglected, yet it turns out to be a huge factor that brings positive results. The coach's communication with athletes (e.g. the importance of feedback), but also the coach's communication with parents, who are an irreplaceable part in sports, and especially in bicross. The trainer can thus explain to them his methods, procedures and reasons why he does what and how. I mentioned the word stress in the previous paragraph. What about him? How to face him? We tried various breathing techniques (box breathing, double breath) that help a person to calm down, calm the attacks and induce a state that helps us function better and with a clearer mind. In our sports world, for example, the pre-start situation.

Next, we talked about emotions or human developmental stages. How a child actually perceives the world, what he is capable of at a given age and what he still has time for in his development.

The afternoon block was dedicated to the system news of our website in registering for races, which Lukáš Tamme then followed up with his lecture on the material side of bicross. Based on the experience he consulted with his coaches in the Prague-Řepy department, he came up with tables that can be used to better estimate the optimal dimensions of the wheels for each rider (whether we are talking about the frame itself, the size of the gear or the length of the cranks). This material can be suitable, for example, for beginner bikers. The emphasis was not only on the correct size, but also on regular service and maintenance of your bike!

The conclusion was devoted to brainstorming, where various ideas and tips were voiced on how to advance the level of our riders. Hopefully we can continue this discussion soon.

The following weekend is the last workshop on the program, this time with the Spanish trainer Alejandro Alcojor Ramos. The venue is again the ČSC headquarters, Prague-Motol.
